6 Powerful Reasons to Quit Your Job

6 Powerful Reasons to Quit Your Job In any activity, there will be things you have to endure. Character contrasts, flawed lunch decisions in an open-plan work area condition, the associate who cuts his nails at his work area all are things that probable should be persevered through (or possibly disregarded) in light of a legitimate concern for working environment concordance. In any case, there are certainly some genuine working environment issues where you shouldn’t receive the â€Å"suck it up† strategy. Here are 6 ground-breaking reasons you ought to stop your job.1. Being approached to accomplish something ethically or morally wrongWe all have center individual ethics and qualities, regardless of what work we’re doing. In the event that your activity requests that you accomplish something you know isn't right, or that you accept to not be right, this isn't an occupation you should keep. The solicitation might be something little, something you could push through and look the other way, however that little thing could develop into a bigger solicit or an arrangement from demands that cause you to feel awkward. Not very many employments merit having alarm assaults considerably less merit relinquishing your center values.2. Being approached to do anything illegalThis is even to a lesser degree a hazy area. It’s not simply you thinking this isn't right, it’s the law. In actuality, criminal behavior isn’t consistently got like it is in the Hollywood-ized form however on the off chance that your organization (or your chief) is ever gotten and examined, would you truly like to be the one holding the sack? â€Å"I was simply doing my job† sounds horrendously powerless in court, so why placed yourself in that position? On the off chance that your activity is requesting that you do things that are illicit, that opens up an entire host of results that you have to consider cautiously. Except if you’re prepared to manage those results, it’s tim e to deliver your notice.3. Provocation or bullyingBullying is something that happens just in kids’ lives, isn't that so? Most likely expert grown-ups could never go as far as that sort of conduct. Tragically, no. Obnoxious attack is rarely alright, regardless of whether it’s from senior representatives to junior ones, or associates who think it’s clever to deprecate others. Essentially, you ought to never be caused to feel awkward in a work circumstance and in the event that you are, it’s alright to make some noise and say as much. Every one of you are experts, and meriting regard regardless of if you’re the CEO or the right hand. You shouldn’t expect as a matter of course that you’re simply being touchy; Human Resource offices are prepared in how to deal with circumstances like this viably and watchfully. In the event that that doesn’t work and it turns into an example, it’s time to move on.4. Surrendering an individua l life. This is a really regular hold back, ‘cause it’s valid: nobody gets as far as possible of a profession and wishes that he or she’d worked more hours as opposed to investing energy with loved ones. Numerous employments, particularly ones outside the 9-to-5 format or ones that chip away at cutoff times, make it trying to adjust work and individual life.If you find that your own life is being packed out by and large because of your extended periods or noting messages every minute of every day, it’s unquestionably time for a need re-assessment. On the off chance that you don’t see the circumstance improving, at that point don’t sit tight for the Ghost of Christmas Past to tag along and help you to remember all that you missed by remaining at your particular employment. Begin searching for a new position (or even an alternate vocation way) that works with your own objectives just as your expert ones.5. Occupations that hurt you physicallyMos t employments are straightforward about physical demands†¦must have the option to lift 50 pounds or increasingly, must have the option to represent hours one after another. On the off chance that you end up performing genuinely requesting errands that you didn’t realize you were marking on to do, you don’t need to suck it up and pop painkillers to get past your day. Or then again regardless of whether you knew early, yet you’re less ready to adapt to the truly difficult work and remaining than you used to be, it’s time to ponder what you’re doing. Your wellbeing does not merit losing for one job.6. Sexual harassmentThis can be one of the hardest dealbreakers to deal with, in light of the fact that frequently it’s not simply the activity that is the issue it’s an individual in your work environment. Again, you ought to never be caused to feel awkward at work. Be that as it may, as a general rule, recognizing it and taking care of business can transform into a confounded wreckage of â€Å"he said/she said,† and the individual revealing it very well may be caused to feel like they’d have negative profession repercussions for doing as such. On the off chance that somebody at your specific employment (any sex, any rank level) is causing you to feel awkward by offering wrong remarks or advances, that’s just not worthy. The pressure of the circumstance may well fix any positive vocation progress you’d get by staying, so it’s imperative to investigate other occupation choices and openings. You ought to never at any point feel committed to remain in a job where you’re treated so amateurishly. Furthermore, more significantly, you ought to never feel like you have to conceal it and prop up for the job. There are constantly different employments out there. That can be hard to envision in a tight activity showcase, however work that solicits you to disregard any number from indiv idual limits is likely not a vocation that would do right by you and satisfied later on in your profession. Now and then it’s best to leave, with your best self unblemished, and quest for the following chance.

The End of Osama bin Laden Free Essays

Ever since the twin towers of World Trade Center collapsed in New York on September 11, 2001, United States of America was hot on the heels of Osama bin Laden, the founder and main source of inspiration of al-Qaida, the organization accused of carrying out that heinous attack. Osama was considered as the fountainhead of all terrorist activities across the world and western powers were sparing no efforts to track this elusive leader. There were numerous reports of sightings of bin Laden but catching up on the world’s most notorious fugitive was becoming almost impossible. We will write a custom essay sample on The End of Osama bin Laden or any similar topic only for you Order Now In fact, for quite some time, sightings of bin Laden had become a joke, almost similar to the sightings of UFOs (Schabner, 2011). But on May 1, 2011, nearly a full decade after the dastardly destruction of twin towers, the President of United States of America declared that bin Laden was located in a fortress like house in Abbottabad, a garrison town in Pakistan, and killed in a commando operation. This operation had all the makings of a movie thriller and seemed fascinating in its use of latest technology and show of extreme personal courage by the commandos. The whole operation was carried out by US personnel without any help from their Pakistani counterparts and it was sheer cutting edge technology that hid their helicopters from the prying eyes of Pakistani radars. Pakistan military did not have the slightest inkling that US helicopters had violated their airspace and had ventured deep in their territory, picked out their target and decamped with his dead body. One of the helicopters malfunctioned during the operation and the commandos blew it up to prevent it from falling in Chinese hands. China, incidentally, is possibly the best friend of Pakistan which is gradually becoming isolated from world community because of its persistent dalliance with international terrorism and using it as a state policy against its neighbors (Schabner, 2011). US President went to extent of lauding this incident as justice finally being meted out to a criminal and to prevent any possibilities of his burial site turning into some sort of pilgrimage site for his followers, his body was summarily buried in deep sea with the world having no idea as to where exactly such burial was done. After the initial elation is over, the entire incident throws up certain rather unusual questions. The first of course is how Osama could hide in a garrison town without explicit knowledge of Pakistani army. The second and possibly even more disturbing question that surfaces to the mind is when US President’s public approval was at its lowest, some sort of gimmick was absolutely necessary to halt the downward slide, especially as he is due to begin his campaign for reelection very soon (Schabner, 2011). So, was it a case of extreme valor on the part US commandos and daring use of cutting edge technology, or was it a case of quid pro quo with Pakistani military establishment that handed over Obama in exchange of some as yet undisclosed benefit? This is the question that seems to bother many people around the world, since if such an apprehension is proved correct, it would be another example of US hypocrisy and extreme shortsightedness which it has exhibited time and again in world history and caused numerous crises across the world in foreign shores. Osama bin Laden eliminated: justice done When US President Barack Obama came on television on May 1, 2011 and declared justice has finally been done by eliminating Osama bin Laden in some far off garrison town in Pakistan, the world for an instant felt a surge of joy and relief at the destruction of that epitome of ruthless jihadist terrorism that took so many innocent lives and maimed numerous more unsuspecting peace loving citizens across the world. Really, the world felt that finally the long arm the law in a rather unique form had caught up with that man who ridiculed and taunted all tenets of civilized norms and killed people at will all in the name of some ill defined religious cause. The gory photos of collapsing twin towers of New York on out television screens further added to our relief at the death of the prime culprit who unleashed mayhem and senseless destruction without the slightest feeling of remorse or guilt. Scenes of jubilant public bathed in the all consuming wave of instant patriotism thronging the gates of White House further bolstered the super power image of United States of America and American citizens all over the world felt relived and secure at the thought that now nobody can cause them any harm in any corner of the world as Uncle Sam would be everywhere to protect them from any sort of trouble or discomfort (Schabner, 2011). One question however repeatedly keeps disturbing the mind. Why did the US Administration release a photo of the dead body of bin Laden and why did they bury his body in deep seas in almost a hypochondriac haste? US Administration is of course ready with an explanation of their queer behavior. They did not release the photograph of bin Laden as that was too gory and they buried him in deep sea to prevent his burial site from becoming a pilgrimage site for his followers as has happened in the case of Saddam Hussein, the deposed and dead President of Iraq (Schabner, 2011). It cannot be denied that these explanations have their merit, but the world has seen genuinely gory war photographs before and it would have done no real harm in seeing one more such photograph. And, the US could have flown the dead body of bin Laden in United States, at least for a private viewing of the top brass of US military. That would have permanently laid to rest all speculations that seemed to float around about the veracity of the operation and combat. However, the most disturbing issue that comes up is whether it was genuine effort by intelligence agencies of United States and a case of extreme courage by its commandos or it was some sort of trade off that US Administration had entered into with Pakistan. Obama needed some sort of a magic to revive his steadily flagging popularity graph as he is about to commence his reelection campaign within few months. Killing Osama bin Laden provided that perfect magic that he was so desperately looking for and he could pull it off by making a deal with Pakistani military which handed Osama bin Laden to US in return for some undisclosed booty. If this has actually been the case then United States has actually boosted international terrorism instead of eradicating it substantially (Schabner, 2011). Osama bin Laden killed in a daring commando raid by US May 1, 2011 will surely be marked as a watershed day not only in the history of United States but also the whole world. It was on this day that terror mastermind Osama bin Laden was eliminated by commandos of United States military. The world heaved a sigh of relief not only at the news that bin Laden would no longer be able to implement his nefarious plans of inflicting death and destruction on innocent civilian population across the world, but also in seeing the reaffirmation of the age old adage that good always wins over evil. This reaffirmation bolstered the sagging morale of millions of people across the world who had been hapless victims of mindless destruction unleashed by Osama and his henchmen. They once again raised their heads in firm conviction that evil, however venomous it might be, can never win over ood (Schabner, 2011).. Barack Obama, President of United States, could rightly have soaked in vicarious glory and valor of his commandos and could have strode the podium like a victorious Roman Emperor as he returned from a conquest with the head of the fallen king held high on a pike. But Obama did nothing of that and showed remarkable control and composure on such a momentous occasion and he deserv ed full throated praise for it (Schabner, 2011). But several nagging issues fail to leave the mind. The first, quite obviously, is why did the US military not release a photograph of slain Osama bin Laden? The argument put forward by US that the photograph would have too gory really does not hold water as only a couple of years back Sri Lankan military displayed the body of slain guerilla leader Prabhakaran with his head barely attached to his shoulder and that of his son with his head partially blown off. It was a commando raid, not a tea party, and such gore and blood is an integral part of such raids. So, the reluctance to publish any photograph of bin Laden raises a couple of other prickly questions too. The first among those is, did Osama get killed in that commando raid or was he handed over by his protectors, the military establishment of Pakistan, to the US forces in return for some undisclosed booty? The suspicion becomes stronger at conflicting details that kept on emanating from US Administration about the exact nature of combat that floored Osama. Initially it was said that he offered stiff resistance which was gradually changed to he was completely unarmed and could hardly find time to offer any sort of resistance. US Administration tried to save its face by saying that it was deliberately spreading confusing and conflicting information to baffle the enemy and it is a common ploy in times of war (Schabner, 2011).. But what enemy are these people talking about? Here was a man accompanied by a couple of his wives, children and grandchildren living in a mansion that did not have any modern means of communication and that man has been killed. So, how enemies of United States would be kept at bay by spreading confusing information on the degree of resistance this man had put up before his death genuinely belies comprehension. The corporate world is advancing more and more each day as many businessmen are expanding their businesses all over the world. There is therefore the need for everyone to learn and be able to manage multicultural skills that would enable proper understanding and promote healthy relations with all parties involved in a certain field of work. This promotes understanding and respect between the parties. For instance, many black countries do not allow some behaviors that are common with the whites such as kissing on the streets, holding hands to mention but a few. If the whites, for example are in a black’s country, it is always appropriate to try and fit into the foreigner’s culture and moral values by avoiding those actions that are not accep table in that country. A successful working environment is also promoted by equality between all members involved. Corporate individuals and the society as a whole should practice equality and avoid any actions that discriminate against all human rights. Prejudice is directly related to culture of one’s society because if one’s cultural believes and norms do not allow inequality, it is easier for that person to treat every person equal regardless of color, social status, race or nationality. Multicultural skills may as well be learned through avoiding certain behaviors such as nativism which looks down upon foreigners in a certain country. Rather, the foreigners should be treated well and supported on grounds of equal human rights. Multicultural skills may also be promoted by understanding and accepting the religions of other people because everyone has a right to choose his/her religion. This way, businessmen will have no trouble dealing any party regardless of on e’s religion. Advertising Looking for essay on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Racial discrimination has been in our societies for long putting certain boundaries to people based on their skin color. Multicultural skills should involve equal rights to all without discrimination on their color. For example, corporate personalities should not put limitations on certain races for which they can do business deals with. Employment opportunities should as well be made open to everyone. Multicultural skills also involve accepting and understanding sexism as well as heterosexism and learning on how to deal with such individuals in the workplace making sure not to discriminate them. Being gay does not necessary mean that one is immorally upright; neither should the practice prevent the person from living a normal live including working and having a career like any other person. Cultural classism should not be practiced at all in the workplace. However, many people today are discriminating people based on their social class may be because of some cultural practices or based on their socio-economic status. However, there should be no such discrimination in the work field but rather skills and professional abilities of individuals should be exercised. There are certain social groups or even individuals who may feel that they are unable to perform a given activity well enough may be due to their body sizes or social class where they belong to. Multicultural skills should involve ability to identify these kinds of people and assist them get their self esteem and confidence rather than discriminating them. 5 Uses of Infinitives

5 Uses of Infinitives 5 Uses of Infinitives 5 Uses of Infinitives By Mark Nichol An infinitive is a phrase, consisting of the word to and the basic form of a verb, that functions as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. Here’s a discussion of the five types of infinitives. 1. Subject An infinitive can constitute the subject of a sentence. For example, in â€Å"To go, even after all that trouble, didn’t seem worthwhile anymore,† â€Å"to go† is the action that drives the sentence. 2. Direct Object In the sentence â€Å"We all want to see,† â€Å"to see† is the direct object, the noun (or noun substitute) that receives the action of the verb. â€Å"To see† refers to a thing being done or, in this case, desired to be done: the act of seeing. 3. Subject Complement In â€Å"My goal is to write,† â€Å"to write† is the subject complement. A subject complement looks just like a direct object, but the difference is in the type of verb preceding it. The verb in the previous example, want, is a transitive verb. (Transitive verbs have two defining characteristics: They precede a direct object, and they express an action.) In â€Å"My goal is to write,† the verb is a copular, or linking, verb one that links a subject to a word or phrase that complements it. (In this sentence, â€Å"to write† is the goal, so it’s the complement of goal. Note that in the previous example, â€Å"to see† is what those referred to as we want, but it’s not the complement of we.) 4. Adjective In â€Å"She didn’t have permission to go,† â€Å"to go† modifies permission it describes what type of permission is being discussed so the phrase serves as an adjective. 5. Adverb In â€Å"He took the psychology class to try to understand human behavior,† â€Å"to understand (human behavior)† explains why the taking of the class occurred, so it’s an adverb modifying the verb took. Smoking Cessation Among Nursing Students at a Local University Research Paper

Smoking Cessation Among Nursing Students at a Local University - Research Paper Example Therefore, the study secondarily aims to determine a suitable goal rate for this population considering nurses are already meeting the national objective. Problem Statement There is considerable research available regarding the ill health effects of smoking. In 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that five million people were killed – more than HIV/AIDS, or malaria together. Further, they reported that it is â€Å"the single most preventable cause of death in the world today† (WHO, 2008). Healthy People 2020, a report by the Surgeon General, suggest that a paramount objective regarding smoking is to implement policies to reduce tobacco use and initiation among youth and adults (HealthyPeople.gov, 2011). The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services state that smoking cessation programs have been proven to work (2011). Currently, Nameless University does not have a smoking cessation program in place. In order to remove the access barrier that currently exists, a pilot study will test whether a smoking cessation program is feasible and effective to employ long-term. Purpose of the Study The overall purpose of this study is to encourage nursing students who smoke to cease smoking before they enter the medical workforce. Initially, this will be a pilot study to determine the effectiveness of the health promotion smoking cessation program. Additional pilot study goals include the following: (1) To study the outcomes by participants during and after health promotion training. (2) To study whether the implementation of the health promotion smoking cessation program achieved its objectives. (3) To study the factors and conditions affecting the success of the smoking cessation program. If the... This paper approves that the issue of smoking among nursing students has attracted attention throughout the world. It is important for nurse faculty to recognize the scope of the problem and to lend support to programs designed to promote smoking cessation. Nurse faculty possess knowledge and skills regarding health promotion, and they should consider working collaboratively with student health service personnel to promote smoking cessation on their respective campuses. Research suggests that many college students want to quit smoking. Faculty should seize opportunities to support students in this effort and to raise awareness of services available to help student smokers quit. The relatively less-encouraging smoking data among nursing students suggest the need to promote tobacco education and intervention efforts in this population. This report makes a conclusion that health professional schools, public health organisations and education officials should discourage tobacco use among health professionals and work together to design and implement programmes that train all health professionals in effective cessation counselling techniques. Given the concerns as to tobacco smoking of students who are supposed to be advocates for healthy lifestyle, further investigations could be of help to determine why student nurses do not want to cease their smoking habits. The formulation of an internationally standardized explanation for tobacco smoking among this demographic may be of use to help standardize succeeding researches on cigarette smoking.

Primiparous perception of labour pain Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words

Primiparous perception of labour pain - Essay Example Back ground and obstetrical data will be collected using patient's files. Following the completion of each interview; Data are usually text so audio tapes transcription using data base needed and themes best describing pain perception will be analysed. Hermeneutic phenomenological approach will guide me to understand women's experience of labour pain. This study will take a step in complex field of pain understanding and management by attempting to gain more understanding of primiparous perception of labour pain by focusing on quality, nature and meaning of pain rather than pain intensity. According to Creswell (1998), "The investigator writes a research questions that explores the meaning of that experience for individuals and asks individuals to describe their every day lived experience then collects data from individuals who have experienced the phenomena under investigation". Normal birth defined as "Spontaneous in onset, low-risk at the start of labour and remaining so throughout labour and delivery. The infant is born spontaneously [without help] in the vertex position [head down] between 37 and 42 completed weeks of pregnancy. After birth mother and baby are in good condition." (WHO, 1999). Although natural labour pain is a positive pain indicates that women's body working well and hard, and mostly increases in intensity with progress of labour, reaching mother to appositive end - the baby; most women report painful labour especially for those who had not previous birth experience "primiparous women". Most women represent perceived labour pain as cramping, sharp, aching, throbbing, pressing, shooting, and few women not experienced painful labour. That means the only suffering women can know what it feels like .The degree of pain experienced during labour is related to frequency, intensity, duration of uterine contraction and dilatation of the cervix. The positions of the fetus, descent of presenting part, stretching of the perineum and pressure on the bladder, bowel and sensitive pelvic structures also contribute to pain levels (Melzack, 1993). During the first stage of labour visceral pain of diffuse cramping and uterine contraction felt more within primiparous , in the second stage of labour ,sharper and more continues somatic pain in the perineum caused by fetal head pressure felt more within multiparous women.(Lee Man et al 2003). According to Ural (2004) labour pain perception and expererience range from woman to woman and also from pregnancy to pregnancy. Waldenstrom (1999) highlighted many of the factors that affect experience of labour pain like: belief in ability to cope with pain, societal expectations and beliefs about labour pain, birth environment, anxiety, fear and previous experience of birth. Midwifes are less able to accurately identify pain levels when the women describe them as sever. Non verbal cues (facial expression, body movement and vocalization) may be appropriate tools for the assessment of pain, however, action

Night Essay

Elie Wiesel’s Night is a novel about himself and his family and their time in Auschwitz. This book describes the most gruesome event in human history, the Holocaust. It also describes the psychological effect that the Holocaust had on the young people and adults who survived the horrible event. In the interview with Bob Costas Elie describes some of the aspects of Judaism. The main setting of this book is in Auschwitz, a concentration camp in the Holocaust and is from Elie’s point of view. This book has a sad tone to it and this book has many different conflicts. First off, Elie Wiesel’s novel Night is Elie describing his time in the biggest concentration camp in the Holocaust, Auschwitz. The purpose of writing this novel in my opinion was to inform people of what actually happened in these concentration camps on a first-hand account. Secondly, many historical and psychological events were present in the book. An example of this is the descriptions of Auschwitz by Elie Wiesel. Elie also describes the crematories and gas chambers that were used to exterminate the Jewish people in Europe. Some psychological aspects of the Holocaust are that many kids knew that their parents were dead and had to go on with their lives. Also, During Elie’s interview with Bob Costas, he describes how his community was mainly Jewish and how the shops in the town were closed on Saturday and on Saturday and on the Sabbath people changed and became sacred. Lastly, the novel Night has two main settings. It takes place in a small town in Transylvania called Sighet. Also it takes place in Auschwitz, the largest concentration camp in the Holocaust. This book is told from the point of view of Elie. The tone of this book is a distraught tone. There were many conflicts in Night there was Man vs. Man with Jews against the Nazi regime. There was Man vs. self when the Jews had to tell themselves that they would make it through the Holocaust and survive. Lastly there was Man vs. nature when the Jews were running around in the night for 40+ miles. In conclusion, I really enjoyed reading Night because it gave me a better understanding of the Holocaust and what it felt like to be in a concentration camp. Night is an interpretation of the Holocaust from the perspective of a young boy named Elie Wiesel. The Holocaust is a tragedy not only of Jews but of all mankind because it deals with the question of human freedom and equality. It touches people ‘s souls because it is not just a narration about the Holocaust and its victims it is the author ‘s real memories with all the emotions and feelings . It is hard to refer this book to the memoir genre because the truth in it is combined with the invention it is a literary work not a documentary one. Nevertheless, we can see that under the main character, Eliezer, is hidden the author himself. After the occupation of Hungary by the Nazis , Eliezer and his father are separated from the mother and sisters and their terrible journey to the concentration camp of Auschwitz starts . They are exhausted , hungry and practically cannot move but it is only the beginning . One of the most terrible Eliezer ‘s memories is the picture of the hanging of fellow prisoners in the middle of the camp . Another terrible episode is a dreadful , slow death of a young boy , who was accused in collaborating with the Nazis ‘ enemies . Elie asks â€Å"Where is God ? Where is He? † This shows how the Holocaust affected Elie’s faith in God. http://essaytree. com/english-literature/criticism-over-night-by-elie-wiesel/ Elie Wiesel was born in the small town of Sighet in Transylvania, where people of different languages and religions have lived side by side for centuries, sometimes peacefully, sometimes in bitter conflict. The region was long claimed by both Hungary and Romania. In the 20th century, it changed hands repeatedly, a hostage to the fortunes of war. Elie Wiesel grew up in the close-knit Jewish community of Sighet. While the family spoke Yiddish at home, they read newspapers and conducted their grocery business in German, Hungarian or Romanian as the occasion demanded. Ukrainian, Russian and other languages were also widely spoken in the town. Elie began religious studies in classical Hebrew almost as soon as he could speak. The young boy’s life centered entirely on his religious studies. He loved the mystical tradition and folk tales of the Hassidic sect of Judaism, to which his mother’s family belonged. His father, though religious, encouraged the boy to study the modern Hebrew language and concentrate on his secular studies. The first years of World War II left Sighet relatively untouched. Although the village changed hands from Romania to Hungary, the Wiesel family believed they were safe from the persecutions suffered by Jews in Germany and Poland. The secure world of Wiesel’s childhood ended abruptly with the arrival of the Nazis in Sighet in 1944. The Jewish inhabitants of the village were deported en masse to concentration camps in Poland. The 15-year-old boy was separated from his mother and sister immediately on arrival in Auschwitz. He never saw them again. He managed to remain with his father for the next year as they were worked almost to death, starved, beaten, and shuttled from camp to camp on foot, or in open cattle cars, in driving snow, without food, proper shoes, or clothing. In the last months of the war, Wiesel’s father succumbed to dysentery, starvation, exhaustion and exposure.

The Giver by: Lois Lowry shows a supposed utopian society in the future, where the main character Jonas comes to learn the truth about his society and its inner workings. The Giver is full of different sociological concepts like functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Functionalism Functionalism can be defined as a society that is made of many different parts; each part has a job or a function that must be accomplished to maintain the stability within the society (Henslin 26). Functionalism is part of the macro-social perspective. The macro-social perspective is when sociologists study society in a larger scale. Functionalism plays a big part in The Giver. The civilization has assignments; which are jobs given to the people living there based on their aptitude and personality. For example, Jonasrs father is given the assignment of a nurturer, where he takes care of newborn children until they are placed with a family. Jonasrs mother works at the department of justice where she acts as somewhat of a judge or disciplinarian on the people in the community. Our writers will create an original "Lois Lowry Shows A Supposed" essay for you Create order Within the arrangement of jobs there really is not an opportunity for social inequality. Social inequality is when there is an unfairness in opportunities for members of a society based on their social class or status. Even though there is not social inequality in the community, there is a noticeable stigma for the different social classes. For example, the assignment birthmother is seemed to be looked down upon by Jonasrs family and the rest of the community. When Jonasrs sister Lily says she wants to be a birthmother because she likes the newborn children, her mother chastises her saying there is little honor in that assignment (Lowry 21). If the person does not do their job or is unable to function in society, they will be released from the community. If someone is not doing their assigned job it creates chaos in the community and the leaders, who are called elders, do not like this. That ties directly into functionalism where maintaining the balance or equilibrium is key to a fun ctioning society. Not only do the job assignments relate to functionalism, but also the basis of everything in the daily lives of the people in the community. All of the people there are on a strict schedule, and there is a strict set of rules that each person must abide to. There is no uniqueness to the people, they are all neatly groomed and wear the same clothes. It is later found out that they do not see color, so there is an aspect of sameness throughout everything. Because of all uniformity of the people in the community there is the situation of conformity. Conformity is when people tend to adjust their behaviors or beliefs to be the same as their peers or other people who are around them. Conformity can be an active choice, where someone deliberately changes their behavior to match someone else, but in The Giver there is no free will in regards to conformity. Even though each person has different personalities and different likes and dislikes, their government makes sure everyone is the same with their set of laws and rules. The community in The Giver can be likened to a total institution. A total institution is a setting where people are isolated from larger society and are under strict supervision (Henslin 89). Jonasrs community cannot be the only society that exists; they are isolated from anyone else in the world and it seems like the people in the community do not know if there is a world outside theirs. They are under strict supervision from the Elders who have learned all their rules from previous Elders, but their community had to have started at one time because the Giver still has memories of things that have happened in the past. Similar to a degradation ceremony in most total institutions that exist now, all people of the community are stripped of any individuality. They all must wear the same clothes and live extremely similar lives, everything is maintained and controlled. The Giver is an extreme example outlining the possible dystopia that can happen when functionalism is forced upon a com munity. Conflict Theory Conflict theory can be defined as when a society, composed of groups, competes for scarce resources. This theory was created by Karl Marx because of the economical inconsistencies between social classes during the Industrial Revolution. Conflict theory is very similar to functionalism in the way that a society is composed of groups, and each group has a purpose. With conflict theory though, there is the struggle of groups with more power withholding things from the other groups. In Karl Marxrs case it was the poverty of the lower-class workers because they were getting abused by their upper-class employers (28 Henslin). In The Giver there is no instance of financial or economic conflict theory; because of the extreme equality that the people in the community have. The real conflict theory is the withholding and elimination of memories. Long before Jonas became the receiver the elders of the community decided that the people of the community would not have the memories of the times be fore them. They would not know war, pain, or love. The memories can be considered a scarce resource because other than the Giver and Jonas, no one has them. Wisdom can also be treated as a scarce resource because without memories of past issues, the elders have a hard time making decisions regarding the community without consulting the Giver. Once Jonas realizes the truth about all that the people are missing and how his community is flawed, he desires to make a change. But why cant everyone have the memories? I think it would seem a little easier if the memories were shared. You and I wouldnt have to bear so much by ourselves, if everybody took a part (Lowry 112). After his first painful memory is given to him, he understands that being the holder of all the memories, good and bad, is a burden. Jonas thinks his problems will be solved if the community allows a social change to be adopted. Social change can be defined as when a society changes because of external factors or societal evolution ( Lumen Learning). Having memories would be a deviation in the status quo of the community; breaking away from the normal social institution. Jonas starts executing social change in a small way when he gives Gabriel a memory to soothe him when he is fussing in the middle of the night. Jonas cannot handle all of the immoral things that are happening in his community, and how everyone is desensitized to them because they do not know what they are actually doing. He later on makes the decision to leave the community; if the receiver or the Giver leaves the community the memories that they hold will be given to the community. The Giver has to remain in the community to try to solve the inevitable problems that will come from everyone in the community gaining memories of the past. In the end of the novel it is unclear whether or not when Jonas escaped that his memories were given away. Symbolic Interactionism Symbolic interactionism can be defined as when symbols make up a society, and those symbols help people in a society to create meaning, communicate with each other, and help form and evolve views of the world (Henslin 24). In contrast to functionalism, symbolic interactionism can be categorized under the micro-social perspective. A micro-social perspective focuses on more small-scale patterns like social interaction instead of patterns within large groups. Language plays a large role in symbolic interactionism; in The Giver the people are very precise with their language. Very often in todayrs common discussions a certain level of exaggeration is used; it can help convey a message or level of intensity of a situation. In The Giver precision of language is held to a great importance, and to exaggerate would be to lie, which would be greatly looked down upon. Im starving Immediately he had been taken aside for a brief private lesson in language precision. He was not starving, it was pointed out. He was hungry. No one in the community was starving, had ever been starving would ever be starving. To say ?starving was to speak a lie. An unintentional lie of course. But the reason for precision of language was to ensure that unintentional lies were never uttered (Lowry 70). The communityrs priority with precision of language shows that their society values politeness and also truthfulness. Extreme preciseness of language removes any sort of genuine emotion that communication can convey. Every night each family has to speak about their feelings that they had during the day. After their feelings are spoken out, they are resolved. While there is something good to be said about resolving and understanding oners feelings, the way go about it seems to invalidate the personrs feelings. Being truthful and respectful is a rule that their version of the government has enforced on the people. Going against such rules would be rebellious. Any sort of defiance against the leaders and the rules they created would be oppositional to the community and could be punishable by being released. Whenever a wrongdoing or any sort of indiscretion is done an apology is in order. Apologies are uttered so often that they lose their meaning. The rule of frequent and empty apologies again connects The Giver to the topic of conformity. Another key part of social interactionism is relationships. How people in a society interact with one another is vital to understanding socialization in general. In the present-day world relationships with our family are the first opportunities to develop beliefs. Parents play a key role in developing the concepts and ideas that a person believes. Parents teach their children their version of morals and what is acceptable and what is not. In The Giver everything that parents teach their children align with what the community wants them to believe; it is the s ame way that the parents were taught by their own parents, so they do not know any other way. The things that a parent passes down to a child can help develop an inner thought process that allows that person to see the world and the people in it a certain way. These things can equate to Cooleyrs theory of the Looking-Glass self. The Looking-Glass self is how oners self is developed through how others see us and how they react to us (Henslin 70). In The Giver Jonasrs self starts off aligned within the guidelines of his community. From his early childhood until he becomes a receiver, Jonas is taught by his parents, teachers, and leaders how to act, and how to be a functioning member of their society. His interactions with his parents and peers shape his beliefs, especially how things are operated within his society, he knows no other way then how he has been taught. He is only able to have opinions that ally with the rules and bases of the community and how it is run. When he becomes a receiver and starts receiving memories from the Giver, it changes his inner thoughts and his self. He is conflicted between what he thought he knew and what he has learned. He begins to question the communityrs version of morality and it changes the way he sees the people and leadership within his community. The aspect of role taking within symbolic interactionism plays a large part in how Jonasrs presence in society. In the world today, children often emulate the behavior of others to help them better develop their self. The only way Jonas would be able to succeed and advance in his life would be to adopt the beliefs and behaviors that the community enforced. By mirroring the actions of his parents and his peers Jonas developed his inner thoughts and being in line with what his society deemed correct. In conclusion, The Giver is a drastic example of sociological concepts and how when pushed to the extreme rules and regulations can negatively affect a society. The idea of sameness takes away any sort of individuality that people within a society can have. The people in The Giver are ignorant to the things they do not have. Those things are not material possessions but memories that can change the way they make decisions. The leadership takes away any free will with decision making by not allowing memories of the past civilization and society that was before them. Instead they force one person to hold all of the memories and emotions that accompany them. The Giver can be considered a response from Lois Lowry on the possible outcomes of having a perfect society.

Essay on Good vs Evil Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - 1819 Words

The world as we know it is constantly moving and changing; events occur that can affect people’s lives even if they are thousands of miles away. Whether or not these happenings are good or evil can shape one’s mindset and outlook on the actions they take themselves. Both have distinct strengths and weaknesses; however, the real question one must ask is which side of the spectrum is more capable of influencing humanity. In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson, a wealthy and well-respected doctor by the name of Henry Jekyll, who believes that man is not one but two separate people, constructs a potion which unearths his inner evil (Mr. Edward Hyde), and in the end is engulfed by the strength of his malevolent persona.†¦show more content†¦Some believe that it is influenced by the world surrounding them, or perhaps by personal experiences. It could be that we are exposed to the concept of it at such an early age that we are given our lives to ponder what we prefer. It is also said that depravity is laced in our genetics, passed on through generations. Whatever the case, the demons inside us can at times be inescapable. If it is true that somewhere in our destiny lies evil, it is impossible to hold back. It is a natural instinct for those who are given that gene to do horrible things, and that overpowers the choice they are given not to. In an article addressing the source of evil which discusses well-known figures such as Adolf Hitler, it is written that recent studies have shown the evidence of behavior and personality in DNA. The author of the article believes that it is impossible to attain such tendencies through inheritance. He states, â€Å"The fact that one child may turn into a bully or become a criminal and another not remains a tantalising mystery, and one that scientists cannot possibly explain in simple terms of DNA† (Masters). Masters is suggesting that the transformation from good to bad is a complic ated process that involves many elements. It is an intriguing thought, how a mind can shift from one side to the other.
